Yeah we shoot animals, but don‘t kill them. In my opinion you did everything right, if you take a great picture of a wild animal without realizing the deer you were even there. We don‘t disturb animals to get better pictures.
Get up early, be quiet, consider the clothes you are wearing. The right preperation is everything.
